On the front lines of school children safety
Date: 4/26/2007
The safe transportation of California’s school children is top concern for everyone. While each school district has its own school bus officers, no group of people are more important to the security of our children then AMCOS-member, state-employed School Pupil Transportation Safety Coordinators (SPTSCs).
This un-heralded group of eight coordinators:
*interview all applicants for the job of school bus driver
*determine if they if they meet the criteria of the job
*fingerprint applicants
*conduct written tests
*conduct pre-trip tests
*conduct drive tests
*review accident reports
*conduct and record inspections of carriers
*and maintain files on each person holding a special certificate
In addition to their core duties, SPTSCs also:
*investigate complaints
*examine school bus stops
*supervise safety meetings and orientation classes given by carriers
*and even have an enforcement role when motorists fail to slow or stop in school bus areas
